The Responsible Engineer is a guide for engineers, managers, and organizations at all levels who want to reduce risk, increase product reliability and customer satisfaction, and empower individuals and teams to perform at their best. The book takes the reader through a number of real-life case studies from the author’s thirty-plus years of combined business and technical experience, documenting issues that resulted in performance, cost, and schedule issues associated with high-performance astronautics parts and products.

Using these experiences as a guide, the book argues in favor of an empowered Responsible Engineer (RE) who should lead, manage, and approve their product, from design through to ongoing production and problem-solving. It follows this up with a management tool called REVAS – designed and successfully utilized by REs – and shows how this, or a similar system, reinforced by support from internationally recognized quality organizations can provide a Quality Management System (QMS), which could mitigate much of the risk associated with pushing the envelope of performance of high-end complicated products, as well as increase the efficiency of operations. The book then explores numerous international standards, organizations, tools, and resources which can provide additional guidance for this.

Finally, it outlines considerations for an RE-specific standard which could transform not just the aviation, space, and defense industries, but the manufacturing engineering industry as a whole.
